When asked “What’s new?” in a recent interview with JCT Coatings Tech magazine, Southern Clay Products Vice President Don Poucher responded that, “Innovations to allow the development of VOC-compliant coatings have been in the forefront.” To this point, SCP showcased some exciting products for formulators striving to achieve volatile organic compound (VOC) compliance.

Garamite^® High Efficiency Additives
Garamite^® rheological additives are a proprietary blend of organically modified minerals that provide improved sag resistance, rheology control and enhanced stability. They are used to replace commodity fillers and additives such as talc, calcium carbonate and fumed silica. Garamite 1958 additive is a unique new addition to this product family. Developed for use in epoxy and vinyl ester systems, it is 20-40% more efficient than fumed silica and easier to handle.

Optiflo^® Thickeners for Aqueous Systems
Optiflo^® associative thickeners for aqueous systems are ideal alternatives for urethanebased thickeners. They provide excellent flow and leveling, film build and stability, as well asunsurpassed resistance to blister, spatter and syneresis when used with latex binders.

The newest product in the Optiflo family is VOC-free Optiflo^® TVS-VF associative thickener. Formulators have struggled at length to cope with the viscosity drop that often occurs when a tint — particularly a darker hued tint — is added to a coating system. Optiflo TVS-VF addresses this long-standing challenge, providing the formulator with a VOC-compliant solution.
